Why is writing frustrating? And…

Yes, it is frustrating as hell. It is like searching for something you know that you are not going to get. And yes, it also doesn’t pay well in my country.

We imagine-a cozy environment where we are taking a sip of coffee or tea in our warm sweater and writing a wonderful book with our perfect protagonist. Words are flowing, characters are building, and story is moving like a warm knife through butter.

But it is just imagination.

The reality is often disappointing. In my personal experience, I have learned that it is nothing like my imagination. Here, it is- you will find it a frustrating and energy draining task.

You are going to find a number of difficulties and uninteresting blocks in it. A few are mentioned below:

1. It will never be perfect

Yes… yes, I know, aim for the excellence and blah blah blah… but we as writer imagine a lot and in my case my imagination is 70 percent while writing is 30 percent. I imagine the perfect scene, perfect sound, and with perfect characters in those scenes but here is the twist.

Words become my enemy, I try to put all the chips in the perfect place and in the process, it becomes harder and harder to write them as perfectly as I imagined. Yeah, it is not the perfect world I have able to catch through my words, now I have to edit it so many times to get some satisfactory work.

2. It looks perfect while writing

When you are writing in the flow, you will feel like imagination and creativity is flowing through your blood. Everything is picture perfect. But wait for another two days.

Now read the work you have written. Holy crap… what was I thinking? I definitely was high… what a sheet of bullshit.

Now, the piece which used to look like The Lord of The Ring is looking like a playschool children play book.

Now what?

Rewrite it. Groom it. Edit it. Do whatever you can do to make it better.

3. Lack of appreciation

Let's face it. We all grow up writing something, whether it was our school homework, an essay, or simple messages. It looks like writing is no big deal. They talk like- ‘so you write, I am something of a writer myself’.

Well, yes, they are writers. Last night Adam wrote the whole bullshit to his ex while drinking. He is indeed a one hell of a writer.

Making some random sentences or writing emails is so ordinary that everyone can claim to be a writer. When everyone is around you is a writer then who is going to appreciate your work. LOL!

4. You will get a sh*tty pay

What? You are not going to afford that decent car. If you are a full-time writer without any other source of income then the chances are that you will struggle through your bills.

5. You will struggle everyday

Yes. You are going to struggle everyday while building characters, writing a decent piece, or creating a scene. You will write it then review it and then do the same thing again with the same piece of writing and there is no guarantee that the piece will be amazing.

6. Keep your skin hard

You are going to be criticized for your writing, they could be brutal, sometime they can offer some improvement but most of the time it will be plain stupid. Everyone has their opinion and if you are changing your writing to everyone's opinion, you will never able to finish even a page.

So, why are we still writing? Is it giving us satisfaction, escapism, or peace?

No, we are writing because we are writers. Like every other work, it offers frustration, anger, satisfaction, peace, hate, love, creativity, and almost everything except good money.

We write because we want to write. It is a part of our life. We made peace with this activity. If you are a writer then- write for the sake of writing, that’s it. Just keep writing.
